Karen Henderson

When I create my art, I try to tap into the calm center of myself and let myself respond to my environment and the materials I work with.  I love the rhythm of weaving and stitching. Creating my own cloth feels right, and the challenge of re-creating moments in nature is endlessly fascinating for me.  I take time to absorb each piece that I make in all of its stages, until it is complete.

My work is shown in group or solo shows, and I also create special pieces on commission for individuals, businesses, or through art consultants.  My process for commissions is personal and rewarding for me both me and my clients.  I enjoy learning what it is that people respond to in my work, and what they are looking for in their home or business.  Please visit my links to see more of my artwork, process and inspiration, and feel free to contact me for Exhibit, Commission, or Lecture opportunities.

The other creative hat I wear is as a Freelance Textile / Surface Pattern Designer, working with clients in the Home Furnishings, Fashion and Stationery/Giftware industries.  With this aspect of my work, I create designs using the fiber techniques I love, and incorporate many other art techniques as well.  I also create computer generated designs in Photoshop and Illustrator, and/or my designs are a combination of both hand and computer work.  While this design work is not included on my art website currently,  I'm happy to send design samples upon request, and encourage you to contact me if you have a project in mind.

I’m also working on getting an Etsy site together for the wearable art and other smaller hand crafted items that I enjoy making.  Once I have that shop up, I'll let you know!

Artist statement:  In my work, I am interested in the connections between self, place, emotion and time.  Seasons, atmospheres and the time of day intrigue me.  I try to recreate these natural occurrences, evoking emotions that I associate with them through the use of color, line, and texture.

I use different dye techniques (batik, shibori, color removal, rust print) as well as sewing with my weavings and fabric pieces.  I draw lines by stitching with thread.  Dimension is added with tucks, layers, or other manipulations of fabric.  The lines suggest landscape or other aspects of nature.  Most of the techniques I choose to use are very contemplative, encouraging introspection; other processes are spontaneous and unpredictable.  I try to find a balance between the two approaches, trying to capture those ephemeral, fleeting moments of time.

Green Mountain Spinning Wheels

We are a family owned and operated business handcrafting Saxony spinning wheels from local Vermont materials.  We also handcraft a variety of spinning accessories from Vermont materials such as niddy noddies, lazy kates, drying racks, and orifice hooks.  To go with our wheels, we sell a variety of alpaca and alpaca/wool rovings from our own alpacas, and local sheep.

We show our wheels in several Vermont stores, and at fiber events and farmers' markets.  We welcome visits (by appointment) to meet our animals and see our products.

-Paul and Kris

Mission:  As a family, we strive to create and share beautiful, durable, affordable spinning wheels and accessories.

Linda Marcille Paintings on Silk

Linda Marcille in her studio.
My paintings on silk are whimsical vignettes of both rural and urban life in New England. I create my silk paintings using the highest quality steam set French dyes, the finest charmeuse silk and a one of a kind resist made only in New Zealand. Silk painting is a fascinating and ancient Asian art form which I infuse with my own joyful and whimsical style.

Original paintings as well as giclee prints are available in select galleries, through my website, or at my studio, Crow House Studio, in Brattleboro, VT. I welcome  custom paintings on silk as well.

I also have an online Etsy shop,  where you can buy my silk scarves and some of my prints.  Vermont galleries that carry my work:

   Vermont Artisan Designs Brattleboro,VT
Artisans' Hand Gallery in Montpelier, VT
Frog Hollow Gallery in Burlington, VT
North of the Falls, Bradford VT
   Artisans' Gallery Waitsfield, VT
   Nortshire Bookstore, Manchester, VT
   Hayseed Gifts, Wilmington, VT
Peace and Justice Store Burlington, VT

Artist's Statement:  Silk painting is an ancient Asian art form and it is very unique and mysterious. The silk itself is seemingly so fragile yet it is one of the strongest fibers in nature. There is also a serendipitous quality to painting on silk with dyes. The process never allows the artist to be fully in control or to know exactly the effect that will be created.

My paintings on silk are whimsical vignettes of both rural and urban life in New England. It is my hope that they instill in the viewer a sense of joy and lightness. I also hope that my silk paintings are as healing to those that view my work as the process of creating them is to me.

The creative process has been a powerful healing force in my life. I have been struggling with a Lyme induced autoimmune disease since 2000.  I chose the name Crow House Studio because in Native-American legend the crow represents an omen of change, and is a shape-shifter. Crow medicine encourages people to shape shift their old realities into their future self.

Green Mountain Spinnery

Since Green Mountain Spinnery’s founding in 1981 we have been designing and producing richly colored, must-touch yarns and classic and contemporary patterns for hand knitters.  To this day our goals remain unchanged: to create yarns of the highest quality, to help sustain regional sheep farming, and to develop environmentally sound ways to process natural fibers.

All the fibers we use – wool, alpaca, mohair, organic cotton, and lyocell - are grown or produced  in the United States. We make every effort to purchase directly from individual growers.  Unlike most commercial mills, The Green Mountain Spinnery uses no chemicals to bleach, mothproof or shrink-proof yarns.

From initial contact with the fiber grower through the final labeling and approval of each finished skein, our team attends with care to every step and detail in the yarn-making process.  Each of our skilled employees brings enthusiasm and talent their work. Most of us at the Spinnery are accomplished hand-spinners, knitters or weavers; we have a heart-felt interest in producing extraordinary yarns for your use.

The yarns are created in our mill in Putney Vermont with vintage equipment. We match the dynamic capabilities of our machinery with a keen understanding of the nuances of each fiber blend. Throughout the entire process, the inherent liveliness of natural fibers is respected.

Our knitting patterns are designed to encourage knitters of every level to expand their skills and create natural fiber garments that can be worn with style and pleasure for years to come.

The Spinnery is now in its 30th year of operation.  We are a worker-owned coopertive.

Roselle Abramowitz

For 18 years in Stowe, Vermont, I have created handpainted kimonos.  I use the “T” shape of the kimono as my canvas.  My pieces are presented to the public through galleries, art consultants and interior designers. The drama and delicacy of these art kimonos create stunning abstract art installations.

Artist's Statement: The form of the kimono has inspired my art.  They are presented as abstract handpainted works of art, made on natural silk.

My kimonos are an eclectic mix of the past and present, influenced by travel, life and art.  'Is it not beauty we love in man-made things?'

Soaking up imagery from unexpected sources has influenced my painterly designs.   My inspirations lead me on a journey of color, abstractness, and playfulness.  I never know exactly where a piece is headed when I set out to create it.  My spirit of adventure is clearly evident in these works, which create stunning abstract art installations.

I live and work amongst the natural beauty of Stowe, VT.  My studio, with a center cupola, overlooks the Worchester Mountains to the east and my pond to the west. The snowy winters, changing to lush greenery and the blossoms in summer all find their way into my heart.

Being self-taught certainly has contributed to my artistic uniqueness.  Life, art and children are inextricable parts of the whole.  I fully enjoy my three children and eight grandchildren- 'the essence of life.'

Ray Materson

"Joan of Arc" by Ray Materson

I embroider. I embroider miniature images using the thread I glean from socks...Yes! Socks. I have collected a great many socks over the years and as long as they are there I'm going to use them...call me a recycler if you will.

The work I create, the images, run the gamut from edgy, personal life images to portraits and sports - mainly baseball - art. I like to think of my embroideries as my job; strange though it may seem.
But my job is really more than a means to put bread and butter on the table. It is through the artwork, through the creative process, that I continue to heal and reconstruct myself. There is always reconstructing that needs to be done. The art is my therapy in a manner of speaking. It keeps me centered and if I am away from it for too long I get uncomfortable. I stress.

I pull apart menial socks and create something new and beautiful out of them. I like to think of this as a metaphor for my own life experience.

I am represented by a gallery in New York City, the American Primitive Gallery. But I am also available through my websites to create personal portrait work for individuals
or to create specific theme images and commissions.

Artist's Statement:  I create art from socks. The works are very small, 2.5 inches x 3 inches roughly. But I have heard they attract people, like jewels in a velvet case. Artwork, moving from the lowly and menial to the sublime.   I am honored that people enjoy my work.
