Textile Gems TM

Self-employed, together with my husband in our business Textile Gems TM, our handcrafted arts business--founded in 2002--creates jewelry and home decor items from vintage ethnic textiles.  Generally, we sell
wholesale to museum shops but we also do a few retail shows during
May and October each year, here in New York City.

We are also avid collectors of unique vintage and and antique ethnic textiles from around the globe.

Our newest venture is Textile Gems TM Greeting Cards, and our card lines currently include 32 blank cards showcasing some of our favorite textile crops photographed from our collections.  You can see them on this page.

Artist statement:  Our mantra is:   "Celebrating the Fibers of our Multicultural Lives."

This can be literal or interpretive.  We love presenting uniquely beautiful textile crops in close-up formats which both showcase their artistry and also act as charming visual portals to learning about other cultures.

Goose Tracks Quilts

I made my first quilt in the early 1980's - a simple traditional design using fabric squares individually cut from templates, hand pieced and hand quilted. In 1992 I started my business, Goose Tracks Quilts, making traditional quilts and quilted accessories.

In 1999 I created my website and my business evolved into making primarily custom memory and memorial quilts.  Over the years, I've made quilts for people all over the United States and around the world.

Artist's Statement:  While I enjoy working with people to create custom one of a kind quilts, I have an increasing interest in learning the design elements and construction techniques that go into making art quilts.  I look forward to developing my skills and creating my own designs in fiber art.

Catmaid

Adrienne Butvinik has been an artist her entire life.  She can't remember a time when drawing, painting and making things hasn't been the reason for waking up every day! She has an extensive background in drawing, painting and ceramics, but lately her focus has been on decorating silk to wear.  Adrienne has been teaching art since 1974 and currently teaches high school crafts where she encourages young artists to express their creativity in functional artwork.  Adrienne is thrilled to see people in her wearable paintings and looks forward to learning from her daily work.

Her work can be found at the Bethel Woods Museum Shop and
Barking Lizards Gallery in Brooklyn, New York.  She also has a shop on Etsy.

Artist's Statement:  I love making art to wear !  I love color!  I love process!  When I create a silk scarf or garment I think of  wearing something LIVE.  I let my mistakes lead me and like to think of the materials and process taking over at some point and making a statement of their own.

Something Else Studio

"I'm living my Dreams :)  As a full time artisan I have the sheer joy of getting up each morning and working in my studio to create wearable art in the form of purses, pockets  and renaissance inspired accessories.  I have many more ideas then I have time to create them, so I look forward to bringing to my festivals new items and new designs each season.  When I set off to college as a returning adult student seventeen years ago I had every intention of becoming an Art & Skills For Living school teacher, but somewhere along the way I ran off and joined a very talented group of gypsies know as renaissance festival artisans!  It is a lot of work to create, promote and manufacture your own designs for my festivals and websites, but it's an adventure I wouldn't trade for anything.  So follow your dreams and BELIEVE in the magic of our own creative soul.

~ I am a self-supporting artist. With hard working hands & a creative heart I have crafted into reality my dreams with imagination and perseverance. Thank you for supporting my journey ~"

Find me at Sterling Renaissance Festival, Sterling, NY  USA  and The Maryland Renaissance Festival, Crownville, MD  USA.

Artist's statement:  "In 1995 I opened my design studio where my love for art, history and imagination could all take flight. I works out of my home studio creating enchanted accessories for  Renaissance, Faerie & Art Festivals.

With the focus on accessories as wearable art, I design a very unique look that transform the wearer from function to Fancy.  Each One-of-A-Kind creation brings it's own enchanting finishing touch, all handcrafted with extra attention to every detail.

I have been creating for 30 years, gaining experience with medieval design by making costumes for Renaissance Festivals. I have spent time doing quilting, fabric dyeing, crewel, beadwork, and photography, all of which I employed when my son decided on a medieval-themed wedding. Now I use all of my diverse skills to offer you all the services of a medieval guild.

I graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art with a focus on graphic design and drawing. I love working in mixed media with painting, textiles, murals, photography, and plaster relief paintings on wood, resulting in dimensional artwork. Some of my painting become interactive as viewers open doors or press buttons to interact with the artwork."

d.e.signed by Diane Evans

After spending many years in a room filled with an ever-changing assortment of teenagers, I am now retired from teaching and enjoying the pursuit of my passions, the greatest of which is bringing art quilts to life.  I focus on exciting colors, strong designs, and precise workmanship;  my pieces are created to enhance the environments of homes and corporate settings alike, and I am available for commissions of all types.

Artist's Statement: I express my passion for color in my art quilts by using hand-dyed fabrics and whimsical geometrics that play with each other and invite me in for the fun.  The machine-pieced and appliquéd constructions are layered with cotton batting and backing and are then machine-quilted with rayon threads to add dimension and shine.

I share Danny Kaye's philosophy that "the world is a great big canvas -- and you should throw all the paint you can on it." Music and mathematics are my muses, and I strive to create art quilts that reflect my love affair with color.  Radiating motifs are used to create rhythm, the use of symmetry brings harmony, and dramatic machine-quilted curves add lyrical movement.

Kantara Crafts

Kantara Crafts is a fair trade business specializing in Moroccan rugs and textiles imported directly from women's weaving cooperatives. I began the business in 2008 after working in Morocco for a year and a half on a project that fought against child labor. While living in Morocco, I met several artisans and immediately fell in love with the carpets, which is the only craft performed solely by women. At the same time, I was shocked at how the artisan's lack of mobility and access to the business world kept them subjugated to urban middlemen's pricing whims. I noticed that at the prices offered by these intermediaries the women barely had enough money to pay for their materials, let alone for their time and creativity. At that point, I decided to start Kantara Crafts as a means to directly support the artisans while reinvesting  a portion of the proceeds into education and business development initiatives within these very cooperatives. And the rest is history.

While there is no Kantara storefront, I do private consultations, trunk shows, presentations, and rug parties for those interested in seeing the rugs in person.

-Alia Kate

Mission:  Kantara Crafts is the premiere source for fair trade, handwoven Moroccan carpets in the United States. Kantara Crafts hand selects each carpet from women's weaving cooperatives in Morocco. As a result of its relationship with the artisans, Kantara ensure that its products are of the highest quality and with the most captivating designs.

Meaning “bridge” in Arabic, Kantara seeks to establish local and long-lasting relationships by bridging the gap between women artisans in Morocco and socially-conscious communities in the United States.

Quilted Artworks- Marcia H. Eygabroat

"All the Time in the World" by Marcia H. Eygabroat

I am a nationally recognized award winning quilt artist, known for my extremely detailed architectural quilts. My quilts have traveled in the Tactile Architecture portion of the Houston Quilt show.  I  have, among other awards, won "Best Workmanship" in "Expressions", a Ricky Tims sponsored show.  I have been published in national magazines and books.

Having recently built a new studio, I am teaching my quilting techniques.

Artist Statement:  As a left - handed art major in college many years ago, I realized I got dirty while creating most art.  Being meticulous, until being introduced to quilting in the late 1990's; I did not pursue many artistic endeavors.  Since then, I have been consumed by quilting.

My quilting techniques and subject matter have evolved since receiving my first of many digital cameras.  My camera and laptop have been the starting point of each quilted creation.  I start with a photograph and edit it with computer software.

Architectural quilts are my passion.  I love the way lights and shadows play across these structures.  It is a challenge to recreate the perspective of these objects.  I use commercial cottons, cut into tiny pieces fused by "puzzle piecing" each next to each other.  This method lets me show the greatest detail of the architecture and I find it quite challenging.

I have been using this technique in my latest quilts. "Puzzle piecing" is also perfectly suited for portraits and still lives.

Jane Porter

I am an independent fashion designer, lover of textiles, a weaver, spinner and dyer (natural dyes). I love to create unique accessories with unusual fabrics. I am of Armenian heritage and often incorporate vintage textiles from my grandmothers in my work. I also love collage and working with dry mineral pigments, which allows me to experiment with many different mediums.

The Pre-Raphaelites played a large part in shaping my outlook, as I was an English major in college. I also love cats, big and small, especially Siamese.

Many things inspire me--people who do their best at whatever they do; the art, music and crafts of different cultures; beautiful plants, trees flowers and shells. I enjoy collaborating with other artists and like the energy that is exchanged.

Mission:  To explore, promote and create interesting, beautiful, and cutting edge textiles using natural fibers, pigments and dyes.
