Sara Lechner

I began working with textiles more than 20 years ago when I discovered that this was my way of connecting with the world and contribute bringing more fantasy, inspiration and a smile to it. I live in a world of little people and awesome worlds, all born in my imagination.  My art was shaped by a life full of experiences in two continents, Europe and South America (where I'm living now once more). My childhood was populated with an imagery of strange creatures born from the art of the Jesuit Missions of Argentina.

Artist's statement:  I'd like to inspire people through the spell of  medieval and folk motives, angels and birds. They live with me even when I do more minimalistic contemporary art...

A customer once described my hats as "flamboyantly historical". This perfectly describes my pieces.  My work is created from thrift store purchases and vintage/antique fabrics and trims.  I hand paint, bead and otherwise mangle these fabrics to create wearable art.

All of my hats have a vintage quality whether neo Victorian, Edwardian or roaring 20's inspired but are also completely modern.  I always keep the "wearable" in wearable art.

Artist's statement:  Fashion is fleeting but style is eternal.

Morna Crites-Moore * Wicked Waif

There is a soft spot in my soul for old and worn items, especially textiles. I find great pleasure in recycling abandoned articles of clothing into new works of art. I have a special kinship with old woolens, particularly old sweaters, which I turn into felted wool through a fulling process of repeated agitation in hot, soapy water. The resulting wool felt is thick, luxurious, and available in all the  rich colors which seem to find their way to me via thrift stores, yard sales and caring friends.

My household motto, passed down from my grandmother, through my mother, and now from me to my daughter, is waste not, want not.  I find it very difficult to throw anything away because I can imagine a potential use for almost any object. My studio overflows with stuff waiting, ever so patiently, to be used. It can be overwhelming at times to have so much in the way of raw materials. I actually work best when I have a limited amount of materials to work with. Nonetheless, when I handle my many vintage textiles - velvet, silk, lace, wool - often incorporating found objects, metals, jewels, and antique buttons into the creative process, I am quite happily in my element.

The making becomes a meditation and I become lost in the process.

The outcome runs the gamut from small art quilts, to penny rugs, garlands, ornaments, flags, purses, pincushions, scarves, cuffs, small samples of sewn folk art, dolls, and so on. I never know what direction I’ll head for . . . it’s a mystery.

Artist's statement:  I'd like to set dreams free - yours or mine. I'd like to create things which are so meaningful they may just break my heart, or speak to your soul. Through my work, I hope to know us both better ..... to become closer to my core truth, to meet you (and you, and you), to learn about and honor this earth we all share.

I like it when my work speaks as well as when it listens.

Tilonia

Tilonia is a mission-driven, social enterprise developing the entrepreneurial skills and business capacity of artisan enterprises managed and owned by rural artisans in India.

The Tilonia artisan collections feature home textiles, women’s accessories and gifts suitable for contemporary decorative styles while still reflective of Indian craft traditions. Bring the color and spice of India to your home!

Mission:  Tilonia, takes its name from Tilonia, the small village in Rajasthan that is the home of the Barefoot College. Since 1972, the College has worked to improve the quality of life of the poorest of the poor, who make less than $1 a day. The Barefoot College trains the poorest of the poor to become “Barefoot” professionals who develop their own communities. These semi-literate women and men from poor rural communities become Barefoot solar engineers, water engineers, architects, teachers, midwives and paramedics creating their own solutions to meet basic needs for water, electricity, housing, health, education and income.

Working in conjunction with the Barefoot College, Friends of Tilonia, Inc. has developed Tilonia.com for the sale of handcrafted bedding, accessories and gift items produced by nearly 800 artisans in villages where the College and its affiliates operate. We are replicating this “Barefoot” model by developing Barefoot e-commerce managers who operate the web-based platform and online store, manage and sustain the enterprise, and enjoy the economic benefit of a successful business operation.

From childhood I loved art. I love to draw, paint, embroider, felt. I mix the different techniques together to achieve a goal and then I am pleased. The idea surrounds me until I have implemented it or I will not have peace. I enjoy making special projects for custom orders.  I see this world as a beautiful garden, in full bloom, bright in winter and in summer. So are my creations - bright as paint, showing the strength from the earth and the spirit of nature.

I am inspired by lands, where I have been, the people I met and the seasons!

I opened up an Etsy store and it fascinates me - my creations have traveled to so many countries!. I love this way of traveling around the world and I hope that this is just the beginning of my journey...  And who knows?  Maybe my creations will travel to you!

Artist's statement:  With my creations I try to make people closer to beauty of nature!  I enjoy flowers, fog in the meadow, dew on a cobweb, rhythm in trees... I try to use it all in my work!  I like to be close to nature - it inspires me to create things which reminds me about beauty of nature!
I embroider and felt, sew by hand and with the sewing machine. I like to experiment with embroidery by using freehand embroidering techniques and I like to mix different styles and materials (felt, beads, wool, linen etc.).

Hedgehog Hiker

The Hedgehog Hiker Story:

These pants are made with soft waterproof breathable fabric and partially lined with recycled cotton  t-shirts. The combination
keeps your little baby dry and warm.  I designed these pants after
noticing that my baby’s legs were always wet and cold during our
Portland winter walks.  All the pant legs would become too short
when sitting in a stroller or hiking back pack.

Hedgehog Hiker pants are designed to fit extra long.  For everyday use, wear the folded cuff up. When it is time to venture outdoors, wear the cuff down. This extra couple inches really helps keep little ankles cozy and provides parents confidence to enjoy some fresh air.  There is an adjustable waistband and awesome big pocket for treasures.

A sustainable product and business;  “Hedgehog Hiker” pants are made using material milled in the USA, recycled fibers, and eco-friendly print methods. 80% of the materials are purchased from vendors in the Pacific Northwest.

So grab a pair and get outside!

Available at:

Milagros Boutique, NE 33rd  (Portland, OR)
Piccolina, 26th and Clinton  (Portland, OR)
Polliwog  (Portland, OR)
Bug a Boo of Ashland  (Ashland, OR)
Bambini of Eugene  (Eugene, OR)

Artist's statement:  My name is Emily Purdin of “Hedgehog Hiker”, hiking clothes for children. The “Hedgehog Hiker” clothing brand is designed to keep children dry, active, and comfortable. As a textile artist, I felt compelled to make a product that is 100 % unique. Every last detail has been designed by me, right down to the printed fabric. My customers really appreciate this attention to detail. Best of all, the clothing  is made specifically for the rainy Pacific Northwest! You know if it works here, it will wear well anywhere!  Thanks for continuing to support locally made and sustainable products.

(No hedgehogs have been tested in the making of these clothes.)

Lente Julcsi

My name is Júlia Lente.I live in the heart of Europe, in Hungary with my family.

I inherited the love of sewing from my Great-grandmother: she was a seamstress. At first I made toys and blankets.  Today I mainly create jewelry, bags and other accessories.  My creations are usually made from fabric and felt and are embellished with embroidery, beads and crocheting.  I love to have a needle in my hand and a thimble on my finger and I am delighted when I can create. I like bright colours, soft lines, the shiny and smooth surface of beads and the touch of yarn and fabrics. My work is inspired by nature, colours, shapes and feelings.

I think recycling is very important therefore I often work with used but high quality materials, thus protecting the environment.

PKL Designs

Transplanted from Jamaica to the prairies of Wyoming, I dye paint silk and create bright, flowing contemporary fiber art pieces ...wall hangings, banners, paintings, table runners, garments to order, small purses. I'm looking for folks who like to enhance their homes and offices with color. Custom commissions are always welcome.
- Phillippa K. Lack

Artist statement:  To beautify the world with my art.

The fluid surface of the silk dares me to play with its shifting textures. The fibers hold and release the tropical colors of my childhood in their own quixotic alchemy. From the sheer transparency of silk chiffon to the deeply-plied silk charmeuse, each fabric takes the precious French dyes from my brush like a willful child.

Once you’ve touched your brush to the silk, you are committed. Whether it is wall décor or clothing, there is no changing your mind, no backtracking. Brush, dye, silk … the path is unforgiving. But this immediacy allows me to flow with the moment, be completely present. An error becomes another choice, a different commitment, another path to walk. An initial vision, which at first seems to be mine, becomes its own master.

Affaires Nomades

Hi.  My name is Fumika.

I work with textiles, specializing in interior decor. I became interested in textiles while working as a set designer at theatres. I create drawings and work them on to various materials, depending on the object.  I especially like  linen and hemp.

My brand is called “Affaires Nomades” and I got the name from my fascination for the nomadic life.  I want to explore the idea of interior design as a reflection on voyages and nature.  In this way, the question is how to integrate my drawings on to the fabric by using various methods.

The first series of my collection is called "Fragments", original drawing designs made by my self, printed on fabric in France, limited editions.

Care:  Hand wash, first in cold water, then at 30 ° C recommended.
Most of the pillows listed in my Etsy shop include the inserts so that you can use them immediately.  But do not hesitate to ask me if you prefer only the covers to save on shipping.

Artist's statement:  Constant experimentation in seach of new techniques and ideas.  Objects that inspire our dreams.  I want to explore the idea of interior design as a reflection on voyages and nature.

Wendy Mamattah Braid and Stitch

We love to create African Inspired innovative Quilt and Fiber Art as well as contemporary western pieces in the mix.  That is what braidandstitch is all about!

I'm Wendy Mamattah and the owner and CEO of Braid and Stitch and an award winning quilt and fiber artist living in Portland, Oregon. Originally a Journalist from Ghana in West Africa, I have always loved working with fabrics.  As a child in primary school , as early as age five, I often received prizes for needlework instead of English or Geography which made me realize that there was a part inside of me that loved to create.

My work continues to evolve in both subject and technique. Recurring throughout in strong, clear color, texture, visual impact, and meticulous detail. I love the colors of the world as it is. I love the colors that can be imposed on the real world to see it in a new way. The world is enlivened not only by color but also by its textures. I want to get in close and observe the nearly hidden textures of all of the creations of nature. I want to climb up high and see the equally hidden textures of the world as a bird might see it. I want to examine the faces and postures of the people who share the world with me.

My current works which display on this website depict a lot of Africa. I love the vibrant colors of African fabrics and the way they pop to the eye when one looks at them.  Most of my quilts tell a story, and a lot of my stories represent my African heritage which I carry with me everywhere I go.

My quilts have lots of character and dimension as well as a very unique look which are the differences my choices of fabric make.  Beading and painting accentuate my work.

I recently started a pincushion line which I have on my Etsy page, they are called 'Deceptively Yummy Cup Cake Pincushions', a huge 'must have' for sewers, quilters, and hat wearers.  Soon I will have a wearable art line which will also be in ethnic vein.

Artist statement:  The freedom to express what the mind sees as beautiful, whether constructed in fabric or any other art medium, is an amazing gift.  Here at Braid and Stitch we do just that!

colettecolor

My name is Nicolette Ludvig. I live in GyÅ‘r, Hungary, in the heart of Europe, halfway between Budapest and Vienna. It is 20 years now that I’ve been exploring the secret of colours. I do sewing, knitting, crocheting… and I’m passionately interested in whatever is made of yarn and textile. Lately, I’ve been enthralled by crocheting circles and varying the colours of the yarn. Then I make these circles into small artifacts: key-rings, brooches, purses, pouches, bags and so on. I use threads not only for knitting and crocheting. I like to twist them into spirals and sew them on to a woolen felt base. Exciting things are born this way right between my hands. Click here to read a nice blog article with a story about how my day goes.

Artist statement:  Welcome to the world of colours... COLETTECOLOR expresses that me and the colours are inseparable companions.  All inspired by that which is color and round. I’m exploring the secret of colours while my imagination is captured by round forms and spirals. Creation makes me overjoyed -- and all this to make You happy, too!

LaTouchables

I design mostly body adornment for the modern woman of any age. Much of my work is inspired by nature, history, and culture. I want to create things that are affordable, and become a natural part of the daily wardrobe. Color, texture, wearability...this all plays a role in how it goes in the studio, and of course intuition plays a huge role. That's why most everything is OOAK. (One of a kind)

I like to use vintage and antique cloths in my pieces along with buttons, and beads from around the world. I was lucky to get some Bedouin embroidery dating back from the mid-20th-century, and earlier. My work is always in a process of growth. There are techniques to improve on, designs that architectually need brain-storming, from idea to finished piece, while still keeping the integrity of the original impulse.

I get emotional about hand-stitching, stains, signs of the human touch, beautiful worn textures, and quality. This means I love materials like silk, cotton, linen, bakelite, horn, mudcloth... and I am continually searching, experimenting, and opening up to the new. I see it as a long-term love-affair with developing a soft-sculpture body adornment that crosses genres. My hope is to take the raw materials and make something worthy of showing off their beauty, whether they are a hundred years old or straight off the bolt.

In the long run, I'd like to have a broader audience, and a group of fellow fiber-addicts to get that community dynamic. Of course I'd like to sell more and know that something I make will be worn by someone somewhere. This gives me the impetus to create more, and thus refine my skills.

I'm glad to have found TAFA with the chance to make new friends and contacts.

OmMadeThreads

Nurtured from childhood to create with my hands,  I continue the journey of playing piano, working with watercolors/collage art, taking photos, creating good-tasting cuisine, and yes, playing with fabric.

Beginning with my first crewel embroidery project at the age of eight (and eventually sewing shortly thereafter), working with fibers has been a great love for me.  I discovered the joy of quilting in 1996 and have never looked back.

I began as a traditional quilter and in the past couple years have ventured into the area of art quilts.  I still return to the my ""roots"" as a quilter, but the freedom of art quilting is definitely feeding my soul.

I am currently a local yoga and health education instructor for local community colleges.  I also have a small holistic health practice here in Southern California.

I enjoy a diverse and interesting life, full of people I love and work I enjoy.

I sell my work through my Etsy site and at local holiday craft and art shows.

I do a combination of machine and hand work on my fiber art pieces.  My quilt art tends to involve raw-edge applique work with rich vibrant batiks.  I also perform my own free motion quilting  from stippling and scroll work to the scripting of words into many of my quilts.

I also do commissions, having recent opportunities to create Tree of Life quilts for many loved ones and Etsy customers.  I offer a basic price scale and work closely with the buyer to create the image they desire.  I have also done custom orders on other quilts as well.  It is a pleasure to "co-create" with the buyer.  I have learned much from the ideas and inspiration of those I create pieces for.

Artist's statement:

My work is typically a reflection of my life...

A new granddaughter? Baby quilts...
A yoga profession?  Yoga bags...
A sewing hobby?  Pin cushions...
A look at beautiful lilies on the side of the road?  A Calla Lily quilt....

Ultimately, my mission is to create pieces that bring joy to the recipient.

"My Shrine for Me" by Danny Mansmith

Hello.
I'm an artist who, for the most part, is self taught.  Making art and working with my hands fuels me to be in this world.

So much of today's society doesn't appeal to me so I have turned to creating my own world in my art.

I really wish to share my art with others and try to inspire others to express themselves to follow their own paths.

Artist's statement:  Working with my hands has saved my life.

Instead of being the fastest or the smartest I found my strength, sanctuary and cushion from the world in making art.

My grandma gave me my first art lessons when I was very young. She sewed my clothes growing up and this influenced me to later teach myself how to use the sewing machine - allowing imperfections, emotions, and child like energies to fuel and inspire me to create.

Danny Mansmith's studio.
I want to push myself to make art with the things around me, to be resourceful and to follow my heart’s inspiration.

Making something wearable, drawing with sharpies or the sewing machine, sculpting, to creating installations that incorporate all of these elements has become my spirituality - my survival.
