Wendy Mamattah Braid and Stitch

We love to create African Inspired innovative Quilt and Fiber Art as well as contemporary western pieces in the mix.  That is what braidandstitch is all about!

I'm Wendy Mamattah and the owner and CEO of Braid and Stitch and an award winning quilt and fiber artist living in Portland, Oregon. Originally a Journalist from Ghana in West Africa, I have always loved working with fabrics.  As a child in primary school , as early as age five, I often received prizes for needlework instead of English or Geography which made me realize that there was a part inside of me that loved to create.

My work continues to evolve in both subject and technique. Recurring throughout in strong, clear color, texture, visual impact, and meticulous detail. I love the colors of the world as it is. I love the colors that can be imposed on the real world to see it in a new way. The world is enlivened not only by color but also by its textures. I want to get in close and observe the nearly hidden textures of all of the creations of nature. I want to climb up high and see the equally hidden textures of the world as a bird might see it. I want to examine the faces and postures of the people who share the world with me.

My current works which display on this website depict a lot of Africa. I love the vibrant colors of African fabrics and the way they pop to the eye when one looks at them.  Most of my quilts tell a story, and a lot of my stories represent my African heritage which I carry with me everywhere I go.

My quilts have lots of character and dimension as well as a very unique look which are the differences my choices of fabric make.  Beading and painting accentuate my work.

I recently started a pincushion line which I have on my Etsy page, they are called 'Deceptively Yummy Cup Cake Pincushions', a huge 'must have' for sewers, quilters, and hat wearers.  Soon I will have a wearable art line which will also be in ethnic vein.

Artist statement:  The freedom to express what the mind sees as beautiful, whether constructed in fabric or any other art medium, is an amazing gift.  Here at Braid and Stitch we do just that!

Despite my high energy level, there is never enough time to create all the ideas bouncing around in my head!

Fiber and creativity have been a part of my life since a very young age. I created a pattern from newspaper then sewed my first garment on a Singer Featherweight at around the age of eight. An undergraduate degree in home economics and a master in art lead to a twenty-five year career teaching art and life skills (current idiom for home economics).

Although, I enjoy crafting traditional quilts, dolls and holiday items, my passion is fiber art. A perfect day is one spent in my home studio with fabric spread far and wide creating confetti art. Confetti quilts bring together color and texture with the skill and methods of stitching layers of fabric. Each confetti quilt has thousands and thousands of tiny bits of batik fabric “painted” on quilt batting and backing. Inspiration comes another pastime; hiking trails and beaches here in Michigan or on far flung family vacations.

My confetti quilts have been in several juried local quilt shows here in northwest Michigan and Wisconsin. Additionally, my quilts have been selected for display at the International Quilt Festival in Chicago, Long Beach and Houston. I teach at quilt shops and quilt guilds.

Artist's statement:  My mission it to delight others with textile art that allow for my joyful, creative expression with color and texture.

I have been making quilts for 35 years. Traditional quilts are warm to use and satisfying to make and are the beginning and soul of my art. Throughout these years the availability of new tools, materials and techniques used to make quilts has flourished. As quilt makers we are now able to dye fabric to suit our needs, embellish with threads, beads, rocks and stones. Many of us design original patterns for quilts and create techniques that continually send the quilting police in a tail spin! It is a very exciting time to be a quilter- the art world and the quilt world have merged together and the result has been amazing. I now gather as many supplies from the art supply stores as the fabric stores.

Inspiration for my work comes from many sources. I love to study artists' work and see how they have used colors, space and forms, and then incorporate these ideas into my art quilts. I made a series of quilts from the work of Gustaf Klimt (many a quilter's favorite!), the Group of Seven and  Piet Mondriaan. My own Canadian landscape is represented in my landscape quilts. I love making these quilts where the border surrounding the landscape is a wonderful palate I can use to complete the mood of the landscape. My walks on the beach are now important 'research' excursions.

Cotton will always be my preferred fabric for bed quilts, but art quilts that hang on the wall can be made of all fabrics- linen, silk, wool, rayon, unknown... Purses made of recycled wool suit coats and silk blouses keep these unwanted items out of our landfills and are really fun to design and make. Fabric is everywhere!

My lifelong study of traditional quilts and needlework from around the globe and throughout history has given me the opportunity to accept some very exciting commissions. I have made reproduction textiles for national museums, quilts for the movie industry, and architectural quilts for private collections all over the world. Life is good when quilts are involved.  My work is shown at these galleries:  "Fog Forest Gallery"- in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada  and "Mermaids Kiss Gallery" - in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada

Moments by Christine Predd

I was excited to begin my journey making art quilts in 2001, after being a traditional quilt maker for over 15 years.  The freedom of expression with fabric and thread has become a passion of mine in my retirement.  I prefer abstract to representational work, working from an idea, a word or phrase, or with nature as my inspiration.  I often use photos I have taken as the source for my work.  My work is directed by colors, textures, shapes and sounds of the natural world.  My best work is done intuitively without extensive planning, and I use paints, dyes, threads, fabrics, and needles to present the viewer my personal interpretation of life as I see it.  I consider any day incomplete in which I have not designed, sketched, sewn, dyed fabric, or in some way worked on a quilt.  My creativity in this way has resulted in exhibitions in various juried shows since 2005. Mostly, I enjoy my daily studio life to a level I could only have imagined many years ago.
